Leslie Hill

Board Member

Leslie lives in Portland, Maine, (and part-time in Queens, New York) and teaches in the politics department at Bates College, offering courses examining African Politics as well as gendered connections of women and politics. She thinks of her labors — at her job and in the world — as those of a “scholar-activist”, aiming to infuse learning with a quest for justice. Her career has included campaigning in urban electoral trenches for several decades in the “new South,” serving as program officer for the Youth Project, an early social justice fund, building local solidarity with the anti-apartheid movement, and, while serving for over twenty years on the board of Grassroots Leadership, has organized people to fight injustice for more than 30 years. It now works to build coalitions and infrastructure to abolish for-profit prisons, jails, and detention centers.
