AmeriCorps VISTA member
Katie Bei Heald, who goes by her middle name Bei, graduated from Smith College in May of 2018 with a bachelors of arts in biology and a five college certificate in culture health and science. Bei learned through her studies of biology that there are social factors -- such as race inequity and social hierarchies -- that can negatively affect health at a physiological level. She is additionally driven by her activist work on refugee-related issues at Smith that was expanded on through an internship at Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services in Portland. Bei will be serving as an Americorps VISTA with Maine Initiatives for the following year.
Bei is a Portland native who greatly appreciates the city's proximity to both the oceans and mountains, and shamelessly looks forward to every season (including winter)
