Maine’s Underground Railroad with Mark Alan Leslie
270 Main St, Biddeford, Maine 04005
In the mid-1800s Mainers from Kittery to Fort Fairfield, including Biddeford, put their freedom and fortunes on the line by helping runaway slaves escape to Canada. Indeed, the story doesn’t begin and end with Harriet Beecher Stowe or Hannibal Hamlin, but with the many who defied the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, forming a network of illegal “safe houses” to hide slaves from slave hunters and the law.
Author and writer Mark Alan Leslie will be at the library to discuss the history of the Underground Railroad.
