Join author and journalist Peter Moskowitz for a moderated discussion about his new book “How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality, and the Fight for the Neighborhood”, and how it relates to the changes happening in Portland and what can be done.

This book talk is co-sponsored by the Maine chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and local bookseller Longfellow Books, and will be moderated by Portland affordable housing advocate and city council candidate Joey Brunelle. A brief audience Q&A session will follow the talk.

How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality, and the Fight for the Neighborhood brings some much-needed clarity to the concept of gentrification and how it is affecting American cities. Moskowitz not so subtly suggests that while gentrification naturally brings some improvements to a city, including more people and money, it also frequently kills some cultural traditions, diversity, and neighborhoods, the precise characteristics that make cities so dynamic and desirable in the first place.
