Free screening of ‘Documented’
200 Lisbon St, Lewiston, Maine 04240
Journalist Jose Antonio Vargas was brought to the United States from the Philippines as a 12-year-old child in violation of immigration laws. He “outed” himself as undocumented in June 2011 in a piece he wrote for The New York Times Magazine. He went on to direct this 2013 film, Documented, that explores his story in the context of other young people who try to live as “undocumented” Americans. It asks viewers to consider how they define “American,” a theme that is perhaps even more relevant today. Vargas’ new book is “Dear America, Notes of an Undocumented Citizen.”
The screening, a partnership of Youth Journalism International and the Lewiston Public Library, will be followed by a brief discussion. Light refreshments will be served. Please join us for a thought-provoking evening.
